Regarding the Arrest and Federal Indictment of Fort Bend County Tax Assessor-Collector Carmen Turner 

Today, I learned of the arrest and federal indictment of Fort Bend County Tax Assessor-Collector Carmen Turner, whom I previously opposed in the election for this important public office. 

As a former candidate for Fort Bend County Tax Assessor-Collector, I find today’s developments deeply concerning.

When I entered the race, my commitment was simple: transparency, accountability, honesty, fiscal responsibility, and public service with integrity. 

The Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office is entrusted with significant responsibilities involving taxpayer funds, public records, and essential services. The citizens of Fort Bend County have every right to expect that those responsibilities will be carried out with the highest ethical standards.

The federal allegations involving the misuse of public resources are extremely serious and deserve a thorough, independent investigation.

Public office is a position of trust, not a personal privilege. Taxpayer dollars belong to the people, and every elected official has a responsibility to protect them.

I also believe strongly in our constitutional principles. Every individual deserves due process and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law. We must allow the judicial process to proceed fairly and without political interference.

However, respecting due process does not mean ignoring legitimate concerns about government accountability.

The citizens of Fort Bend County deserve answers.

They deserve to know that appropriate safeguards are in place to prevent the misuse of public funds, that government employees are held to professional standards, and that public resources are being managed responsibly.

This is not a moment for personal celebration or political revenge. It is a moment for serious reflection on the standards we expect from those entrusted with public responsibilities.

Integrity should never be negotiable. Accountability should never depend on political affiliation. And no elected official should be above the law.

I urge our county leadership to cooperate fully with the investigation, review internal financial controls, and take appropriate steps to restore and maintain public confidence.

Fort Bend County is home to hardworking families, dedicated public servants, and taxpayers who deserve honest, transparent, and responsible leadership.

Our community deserves nothing less.

Public service must always be about serving the people, not serving personal interests.

May truth, fairness, and justice prevail.
